Pangong Lake, Ladakh: plan a photo visit

Pale lake ice, clear water and bare ridges create the contrast in these archive images. A visit needs altitude preparation and a flexible road plan; frozen conditions are not a promise for another season.

Suggested time: a dedicated excursion within a longer Ladakh stay. Open destination map

Key sights and photo ideas
  • Pangong Lake — Photograph changing water tones from permitted shore areas.
  • Ladakh mountain passes — Treat viewpoints as optional stops only where the road is open and stopping is safe.
A suggested itinerary
  1. First complete acclimatisation and check the current access requirements.
  2. Reserve the excursion for the lake and necessary travel, with a contingency for weather rather than additional distant sights.
Travel and photography tips
  • Check current permits and roads with local authorities.
  • Stay on established access routes and avoid off-road driving near the lake.
  • Never walk onto lake ice based on an old photograph.
